Special Report:   Premier Wen visits Japan

With Wen Jiabao's visit to Tokyo, Sino-Japanese relations is a hot topic in China. Meanwhile, a growing number of young people have shown more interest in the relationship between the two countries.

Television assistant director Li Xu keeps a close eye on Premier Wen Jiabao's state visit to Japan. Planning a Sino-Japanese relations program, she wants to gain insight from Wen's speech to the Japanese Parliament.

Li Xu, assistant TV director, said, "His address is a sign of positive future relations between the two countries. But there are many obstacles to overcome. Japan should face history fairly."

Like Li Xu, many young Chinese hold a grudge when it comes to relations with Japan. They're trying to strike an emotional balance between history and the future. While some give much weight to past atrocities, others look more to the possibilities in peace time.

Shi Tianhua has been learning Japanese for three years. Interested in Japanese culture, she intends to further her studies in Japan next year. Premier Wen's speech reinforces her objective.

Shi Tianhua, student, said, "I believe the China-Japan relations will be getting warmer and warmer. I want to make it my future career to contribute to developing friendship between the two peoples. "

According to Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang, China and Japan have good prospects in future cooperation, especially in energy. The headlines in the Chinese media hail Premier Wen's visit as ice-thawing. However, they also maintain there is still a lot to be done as the two nations improve mutual trust.
