Five days after the Yunnan earthquake, 12th graders in the worst hit areas Ning’er County are going ahead with their national college entrance exam. Despite great difficulties, local authorities have managed to create a reasonable environment for the students.
The bell announces the start of the first exam and the end of the students’ twelve years of study and preparation. Many see this national test as the gateway to a better future, but here in Pu’er high school, it is filled with uncertainty. These tents are spare exam rooms to evacuate the students, but also a reminder of emergency.
Zhang Likun said,"The earthquake has made my son nervous. It was such a distraction that he couldn’t focus on his revision. He's been so sensitive to the aftershocks. The school has done a lot to help them deal with these problems. But you can’t expect them to do well in the exam as if nothing had happened."
