The governor of the Shi'ite southern Iraqi province of al-Muthana has been killed in a roadside bomb explosion. The bomb was targeted at his convoy and wounded at least five of his bodyguards.

Officials say governor Mohammed Ali al-Hassani was on his way from Rumaitha to Samawa, the provincial capital, when his convoy was attacked. Hassani is the second Shi'ite governor to be killed this month, in what appears to be Shi'ite infighting.

A vehicle curfew was imposed on Samawa shortly after the bombing. Hassani was a member of the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council, the biggest Shi'ite party in Iraq.
