Special Report:   Chang'e I -Journey to the Moon

China is scheduled to launch its first lunar exploration mission, the Chang'e One , today , the first of three stages of the country's moon exploration program.

Mass: 2.350 kg

Mission duration : 1 year

Launch location: Xichang Satellite Launch Center

Launch vehicle: Long March 3-A

130 kg includes 24 pieces of probe equipment

Instruments:

CCD stereo Camera and Interferometer

Imager & Gaamma/ x-Ray Spectrometers

Laser Altimeter

Microwave Detector

High-Energy Solar Partide Detector

Low-Energy Lon Detector

Mission:

Provide 3-D images of the moon's surface

Probe distribution of Chemical elements on the lunar surface

Study lunar Microwaves and estimate the thickness of the moon's soil
