French riot police broke up a blockade of students at a suburban Paris university on Monday. The demonstration at Nanterre University was opposed to academic admission reforms approved last summer.

They claim the traditional open admissions policy is being jeopardized in favor of an American style system of selective universities.

Caroline De Haas, Union of French Students, said, "This law opens the door to state financial commitments and we think it makes the universities compete with each other so it jeopardizes the equality among students."
