China launches nationwide energy-saving campaign

The central government is currently running a nationwide campaign on saving energy and cutting emissions. Government ministries and departments as well as large companies are coming up with creative ways to cut back on energy use.

This is the kitchen at the Ministry of Technology. These stoves look just like normal ones used in most restaurants, but they are equipped with new technology.

There is a sensor on the front of every stove that detects when the cook leaves the area and then the gas automatically shuts off. When the cook returns, it automatically lights up again.

The new technology can save 2,000 cubic meters of gas every month. If used by governments at all levels, it could save 10 billion cubic meters of gas every year.
