Since the establishment of diplomatic relations 43 years ago, China and France have seen great progress and achievements in bilateral ties. Analysts say close relations will continue in the Sarkozy era. Melissa Pearce has more.
This May, Nicolas Sarkozy was elected president of France. Before becoming president, he had been to China three times.
Analysts say Sarkozy will adopt a more pragmatic view on China, but warmer ties are in the strategic interests of both countries.
Feng Zhongping, research fellow, China Inst. of Contemp. Int'l Relations, said, “France will continue its foreign policy towards China, even though a new President has taken office. The current sound French-China relationship is connected with Chirac's profound sentiments towards China. President Sarkozy is likely to follow in his predecessor's footsteps and go on advancing the all-round strategic partnership between France and China. ”
In recent years, mutual visits by the two countries' leaders, political dialogue and people-to-people contacts have reached the highest level in history.
Real progress has been seen in many areas ranging from politics, economy and trade and extending to science and technology, education and the judiciary.
Two-way trade reached 17 billion dollars in the first seven months of this year, up 25 percent year on year.
The two countries have also maintained close coordination on many issues international issues.
Feng said, “The new government of France is paying more attention to relations with other countries. With the development of China, France hopes it can take more responsibility in the world. Sarkozy may put more pressure on China over issues like the Renminbi currency and trade frictions.”
With more cooperation between the two countries, differences and friction may also increase. But analysts say this will not impact bilateral relations' forward movement.
