US officials laud China´s efforts in ensuring food safety

Senior officials from the US Commerce, Health, and Agriculture Departments have praised China's recent efforts in ensuring food safety and product quality.
Their comments came following a visit to China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine on Monday.
During his visit, US Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez talked with the top official of China's quality watchdog, Li Changjiang. Gutierrez said product safety is a sensitive topic in America, and the US government has always made clear its importance on trade relations and imports.
Li Changjiang invited Guierrez for a tour of the administration's Quality Control Center.
When meeting with US Health Secretary Mike Levitt, Li Changjiang said strengthening cooperation is the only solution to secure the food safety of both countries. He expressed his belief that the upcoming Sino-US strategic economic dialogue would achieve positive results.
GAQSIQ Director Li Changjiang said," During the meeting, we are expected to sign a memorandum on food safety with the US Health Department and also a memorandum on alcohol and tobacco with the US Treasury Department."
Meanwhile, the administration's deputy director Wei Chuanzhong has met with officials of the US Agriculture Department. The two sides exchanged views on the two countries' trade on meat products.
All the US visitors were presented on Monday with Chinese-made toys as Christmas gifts.
