Hong Kong's chief executive, Donald Tsang, has welcomed a decision by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress on the region's constitutional development.

Tsang says the NPC Standing Committee demonstrated clearly that the central government values the wishes of Hong Kong residents. He says the timetable for attaining universal suffrage has been set, and Hong Kong is entering an important chapter in its constitutional history. On Saturday, the NPC Standing Committee said the fifth Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive may be elected by universal suffrage in 2017.

All members of the NPC standing committee agreed that the constitutional development of the Hong Kong SAR has been promoted in accordance with the Basic Law, and Hong Kong compatriots have obtained unprecedented rights of democracy.
