Commerce and industry representatives in Hong Kong say the decision is a positive step for the region's Basic Law and its current situation. They say the decision accords with the people's will, and they welcome the timetable it has set. Meanwhile, young representatives in Hong Kong say the region should discuss the implementation of the decision in more detail.

On Saturday, the NPC Standing Committee approved an amendment on the way Hong Kong's chief executive and its Legislative Council are selected. The committee decided to have Hong Kong's fifth chief executive elected through universal suffrage in 2017.
