Arab League chief Amr Moussa says it's "crucial" to the Middle East peace process that Israel cease building new settlements on occupied Palestinian territory.

The Arab League Secretary-General made the remark following talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Cairo.

At the US-sponsored Middle East peace conference in Annapolis, Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert set a 2008 target for a final peace agreement.

But a date to begin negotiations wasn't set because of Israel's plan to build more than 300 new homes in east Jerusalem.

Palestinians claim east Jerusalem as their future capital and insist peace negotiations can not proceed until the latest project is cancelled.
