Thaci was elected by a vote of 85 to 22 to head a coalition government that will try to steer the province through a declaration of independence.
Thaci's Democratic Party of Kosovo won the most votes in November elections.
It will govern alongside its main opponent, President Fatmir Sejdiu's Democratic League of Kosovo.
Both parties support statehood for the province, where ethnic Albanians make up more than ninety percent of the region's population.
