The Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council says overseas Chinese will donate 20 million yuan, or 2.8 million US dollars, to help the storm-battered areas in China's southern provinces.
The office held a donation ceremony in Beijing on Thursday and a representative of Singapore-based Chen Jianghe made the first donation of ten million yuan.
Another Chinese, living in Thailand, donated two million yuan, even though his mainland-based company has lost tens of thousands due to the weather.
Many Chinese in Hong Kong and Macao are set to send their donations to the affected regions later.
