China''s north-south artery, linking the capital to Zhuhai city in southern Guangdong Province is now open. |
It was a race against time as tens of thousands of people became stranded on the Beijing-Zhuhai expressway while heading home for the Chinese Lunar New Year.
Heavy equipment was used to loosen ice which was as much as 43 centimeters thick.
Police in regions all along the highway provided help.
Wu Heping, spokesman of Ministry of Public Security, said, "Almost all of police officers participate the fight for a quick re-opening of Beijing-Zhuhai expressway. More than 3,800 working groups have been set up, involving more than 3.7 million police officers."
Starting at 6 o'clock Sunday evening, cars on most parts of the Beijing-Zhuhai expressway began moving again.
It may be slow going, but it's a relief as many people have been stuck on the road in the freezing temperatures for more than a week.
Relief work staff were out providing emergency supplies of food, gas and things to help people survive freezing temperatures.
