In south China''s Chenzhou, a 10-day blackout is taking its toll on locals. With the weather slowly getting better, Huang uses the opportunity to go shopping for his family’s New Year celebrations.

Huang Zaizi has lived in Chenzhou for more than 50 years and this is the first time he has experienced such a huge natural disaster.

With the weather slowly getting better, Huang uses the opportunity to go shopping for his family’s New Year celebrations.

On the road, Huang is cautious avoiding fallen trees and power cables. But he is happy to see restoration in progress.

Electrician Mr. Luo of Chenzhou Power International said, "The city's cables are as damaged as those in the mountains. We have too much work to do. But we hope what we are doing can help the resumption of power, quickly."

Huang and his fellow citizens are able to withdraw cash for shopping because most banks are equipped with power generators.

Well-stocked supermarkets are open everyday and, although vegetables are a little more expensive than usual, the panic buying is over.

Retired worker Huang Zaizi said, "The disaster is here, but life has to go on. At least we have plenty of food in the market. I know this is because of the efforts made by many others around us."
