Farmers in one of the worst hit villages in southern Anhui are finally preparing for the holiday. |
Villagers say Tao Cunyin is a most unfortunate man. Heavy snow caused the roof of his house to collapse and his family is not close by. This could have meant Tao would spend the festival alone -- penniless, and homeless. But he will not.
Anhui villager Tao Cunyin said, "The county chief gave me three hundred yuan. This is a big help. I am grateful. The money can buy many things."
And his neighbors invited him to stay with them so his shelter and food is free. He is treated just like a family member.
Tao Cunyin said, "He knew I had no place to live, so he invited me over to his house. He said it'd be miserable to spend the New Year alone. He asked me to live and eat with them. We'll spend the festival together."
The neighbors say they will let Tao stay as long as he wants. They do not want to see him all alone.
Reporter Wang Mangmang said, "The Spring Festival is only two days away. And Tao Cunyin can finally settle down. He is still thinking about the collapsed house, but is grateful that he will not spend the new year holiday alone. And when spring comes, the government will help rebuild the house. But before that, he will stay here."
Else where in the village, others are also getting help. Five hundred yuan is enough for holiday shopping. Winter necessities help keep the farmers warm.
Cheng Tongshan lives in a seniors' apartment with his friends. They're just back from the relief distribution center.
A lot has been done to help farmers celebrate the festival, and there will be more assistance coming in the future.
