Obama projected to win Georgia primary

WASHINGTON, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was projected to win Georgia's primary, becoming the first contender to prevail in a big state on Super Tuesday's nominee races.

CNN made the projection shortly after the polling stations were closed at 7 p.m. (2400 GMT), based on previous polls that showed the Illinois senator's strong lead in the state with a large population of African Americans.

Taking a Reuters/C-SPAN local poll days ago for instance, it showed that Obama led New York Senator Hillary Clinton by 48 percent to 30 percent.

According to the Democratic Party's rule, 87 delegates to be yielded by Georgia's Super Tuesday primary will be allocated to the two candidates proportionally in accordance with their supporting rates in the state.

A total 24 states and the American Samoa were holding their primaries and caucuses on Tuesday, virtually making Super Tuesday a national primary day and a key day in the Democratic and Republican races for the White House.
