Obama and Clinton battled to a draw on Tuesday, with Obama winning 13 states and Clinton eight, including the most valuable -- California and New York. Both candidates say they performed better than expected and have tried to lower expectations for the seven Democratic contests over the next six days.

On the Republican side, Arizona Senator John McCain has cemented his front-runner status after a series of big victories. McCain says he feels empowered by his wins. However, McCain's huge victories in California, New York and other major states failed to knock his main rival, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, out of the race.
