BEIJING, Feb. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- New first lady Carla Bruni said her marriage with French President Nicolas Sarkozy was not over-hasty and expected it to last a lifetime, media reported on Wednesday.

It was the first marriage for Bruni, 40, and the third for the 53-year-old Sarkozy. He married Bruni less than four months after his divorce from Cecilia Sarkozy.

Bruni, an Italian model-turned-singer, had a short answer for those who thought the marriage came too fast: "Wrong."

"Between Nicolas and me, it wasn't quick, it was immediate," the newsweekly L'Express quoted her as saying.

In her first interview since their secret wedding earlier this month, Bruni played down her image as a man-eating socialite and told L'Express that she would take her new role seriously.

"I didn't have any hesitation. I wanted to marry him straight away. I feel that nothing bad can happen when I am with him," she said.

"I've never been married before. I come from an Italian culture and wouldn't like to get divorced. I'm therefore the first lady until the end of my husband's mandate and his wife until death," she said.

Bruni has never made a secret of her relationships with the rich and famous, from Donald Trump to Mick Jagger.

"I understand that people are worried about what I am, especially with these portraits of me that are often fantastical and sometimes awful. But I want to reassure the French. I am 40, I am normal, serious, aware, simple, even if I am privileged."
