Special Report: Winter Storm ReliefPart of the Beijing to Guangzhou rail link in the city of Chenzhou experienced a power blackout during the snow storms. Chenzhou is now installing two power supply systems to secure the operation of the trunk railway.
To get the line up and running again, over 8,000 workers from the Hunan branch of the State Grid have been working around the clock for the past week to fix the lines. |
Three of Chenzhou's 110 kilo-volt transformer substations, that provide electricity to trains running on the trunk railway, were paralyzed in the snow storms. Thirteen power transmission lines and 200 towers and posts connected to the substations also collapsed. The damage to the grid cut the electricity supply to trains. Transportation on this part of the Beijing-Guangzhou track had to rely on diesel locomotives.
To get the line up and running again, over 8,000 workers from the Hunan branch of the State Grid have been working around the clock for the past week to fix the lines. Materials required for the repair work have been sent in from across the country. Power supply to one of the substations resumed on Sunday. And with the installation of the last line late on Thursday night, two power supply systems are now able to send electricity to the three transformer substations.
In Shaoguan in south China's Guangdong Province, 38 units are working on restoring the power lines in the southern grid. They've promised to get all the lines back to working order by March the 5th. Rescue teams have arrived in Northern Guangdong to help with the work.
