Muallem refused to comment on whether any suspects have been arrested.

He also gave no indication if there had been an infraction in Syria's tightly controlled security apparatus.

Moughniyah was killed in a car bombing in a residential neighborhood in Damascus late Tuesday.

Muallem has hinted of an Israeli involvement. He says the killing will undermine "any effort to revive the peace process" in the Mideast.
