German astronauts Rex Walheim and Stanley Love ventured out of the station's airlock on Friday to begin the third and final excursion of Atlantis' nine-day visit.

The Columbus module is the European Space Agency's permanent space laboratory and cost 1.9 billion US dollars.

It was launched aboard Atlantis last week and connected to the station on Monday.
