Vote counting began soon after polls closed Monday.

47 parties are competing for 272 seats in the National Assembly and 570 seats in provincial assemblies.

Pakistan's private television stations report early unofficial tallies indicate strong showings by the two main opposition parties.

Fears of violence kept many Pakistanis away from the polls. Latest figures indicate voter turnout was below 20 percent at some polling stations.

Speaking on state television, Musharraf asked political parties to be responsible and accept the results with grace.

Pervez Musharraf, Pakistani President, said, "Whatever the result comes out to be, is the voice of the nation. It is what the nation wants, this is what the public wants, whoever comes up as the victor should be accepted by everyone, that includes myself. We must accept the result gracefully and we should look forward to whoever forms the government in the future."

Musharraf promised a free and fair election. But opposition parties express fears of rigging, and warn of street demonstrations even civil war.

Early celebrations began in some places, ranging from fireworks to people firing guns in the air.

The Election Commission is still collecting data from across the country. Final results are expected to be announced Wednesday.
