But it can't form a cabinet since it hasn't won half of the 272 seats.

The PPP is now trying to forge an alliance with other parties for the formation of a new government.

Initial polling results show the Pakistan People's Party has won 87 seats in the National Assembly. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz follows with 66 seats while the pro-Musharaaf party- the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid, took 38 seats.

The co-Chairman of the PPP, Asif Ali Zardari said the party will try to form a coalition government with the PML-N. The government will not include the PML-Q.

Former Pakistani prime minister and leader of the PML-N, Nawaz Sharif said he would discuss the formation of next government with Zardari.

On the same day, the head of the former ruling PML-Q, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain said the elections were fair and transparent.

Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Chairman of PML-Q Party, said, "I extended my appreciation to the government of Pakistan and to the election commission for conducting peaceful elections. We are and we will gracefully accept the results declared by the election commission."

Meanwhile, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf says he hopes the new government will work harmoniously with all the stakeholders.

Musharraf stressed that all political parties must now focus on the future and cooperate in the best interests of the country.

According to Pakistan's election law, if no party gains more than half of the 272 seats in the National Assembly, several parties can form a coalition government.

If the PPP and the PML-N form an alliance, they will gain the two-thirds parliamentary majority required to form a cabinet.
