17 mln people getting help in disaster-hit areas

Special Report: Winter Storm ReliefRelief work in disaster-hit areas has extended its coverage. Some 17 million people have been added to the list to receive help from the government in recovering from the recent snow storms.

The Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs, together with the Ministry of Finance, has dispatched several working teams to inspect reconstruction work. The central government has increased subsidies for the people in disaster-hit areas, especially for families on a low-income or households on the scheme that offers basic living necessities such as food and clothes.
Reconstruction work on dangerous buildings and collapsed houses has begun this is scheduled to be finished before July. Meanwhile, donations of money and materials from the rest of the country adds up to 1-and-a-half billion yuan.
Wang Zhenyao, department director of Ministry of Civil Affairs, said, "According to our research, there are 17 million people nationwide waiting for our relief work. In just 20 days, we have received 1-and-a-half billion yuan in donations. It's remarkable."
