Authorities say they will soon ban the sale of cars that fail to meet new emission standards, in another move to cut air pollution.

Experts say the new China IV standards are equivalent to Euro IV. The new standards will reduce pollutants by 50 percent at least.

All new vehicles on the Beijing market will need to meet the new China IV standards, which are equivalent to its European counterpart, known as the Euro IV, starting from March 1st. The new standards will ban the sale of cars with old China III standards. The same restriction will apply to all heavy vehicles used for public transportation, sanitation, and mail services, by the first of July.

One car dealer said "Car makers have provided customers with new cars with the IV standards from January. The new cars we stock from the car manufacturers before the Spring Festival all meet the IV standards."

Comparing the new standards with the old standards in a same model, there is no difference on oil consumption, performance, outlook and even price. But the new standards will reduce air pollution by a big margin.

Professor Wang Jianxin, Auto Engineering Department of Tsinghua University said "The new China IV standards are equivalent to Euro IV. The new standards will reduce pollutants by 50 percent at least."

Beijing requires that gasoline and diesel sold at all outlets in the capital city must meet the new standards from the beginning of March.
