Talks have dragged on for weeks with no tangible progress.

Annan says he will personally speak to President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga to try to reinvigorate talks.

Kofi Annan, Former UN Secretary-General, said, "We were not making progress. We were discussing issues that the parties seemed incapable of resolving and we were turning around in circles. And I went to see the leaders to explain this situation and to urge them to give proper instruction - specific and direct instructions - to their mediators. So, please understand I am going to engage the leaders and I know all of you support the peace process. We are going to engage them in the hope that we will find a way of moving much faster than we have up till today. So the sessions are suspended for the moment and I will discuss with the leaders how we move forward and how we are going to work to find a solution."
