Raila Odinga of the Orange Democratic Movement decided to postpone the protest indefinitely, after meeting with former UN chief and mediator Kofi Annan.
On the same day, Annan also met with President Mwai Kibaki.
He has been trying to pressure the rival leaders to strike a power sharing deal to end the country's post-election crisis, after suspending mediation talks the day before.
Last week, government and opposition negotiators agreed to create the post of prime minister, which would be taken by Odinga.
But the two sides still differ on how to enact the change and to what extent.
