Beijing to implement new air pollution control measures

In the run-up to the Olympics, Beijing is getting ready to implement a new phase of air pollution control measures. It's the 14th phase in twenty years. The city has already put over 200 measures into effect.

The deputy director for the Beijing Admin.of Environmental Protection said air quality in Beijing has seen nine consecutive years of continuous improvement while at the same time, the city has experienced rapid economic, social and civic development.

The deputy director for the Beijing Administration of Environmental Protection, Du Shaozhong, said air quality in Beijing has seen nine consecutive years of continuous improvement while at the same time, the city has experienced rapid economic, social and civic development.

In the nine years since 1998, levels of air pollutants have dropped significantly. For SO2, nearly two thirds; for CO, more than one third, for NO2, about ten percent, and about 20 percent for inhalable particles.

Du Shaozhong said, Beijing Admin. of Environmental Protection"The annual average density of SO2, CO and NO2 has reached the national standard. And, more moving currents are in the summer of Beijing. This will bring more rain and help to clean the air. Meanwhile, we will also carry out the 'Air Quality Safeguarding Measures'. So, we are confident to hold a clean Olympic."

The environment official said Beijing will use the "Safeguarding Measures" to work closely with other places that include Tianjin, Hebei and Shanxi to ensure air quality for the Olympics.

Officials say Beijing fully recognizes the importance of the Olympics and that the city is re-affirming its commitment to protecting the environment and improving air quality.
