Yao, doctors to decide whether he will participate in Olympics

BEIJING, March 12 (Xinhua) -- It's up to Yao Ming himself and his doctors to decide whether the injured Houston Rockets center will participate in the Beijing Olympic Games in August, a Chinese sports official said on Wednesday.

"We respect our athletes and doctors' advice and will safeguard the athletes' health," said Cui Dalin, deputy director of the State General Administration of Sport, at a press conference.

He said the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) and China's men's basketball national team are ready to prepare for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games without Yao Ming, who suffered a stress fracture in his left foot and received a recent operation.
