The country has spent a total of 550 billion yuan on the issue.

Sulphur dioxide in the air has been drastically reduced in recent years. The percentage was only 5.4 in 2003.

The recycled amount of city sewage also rose to 60 percent compared to 42 percent from five years ago.

Over the same period, the consumption of coal used for power was reduced by 26 grams a kilowatt per hour.

In 2007, it decreased 10 grams, which saved about 40 million tons compared to the year before.

Electrical power generated by coal was the same as the total capacity generated by water power in the Three Gorges for a year.

And for the first time, chemical demand for oxygen and the discharge of sulphur dioxide decreased respectively by 3.14 and 4.66 percent last year.
