Police say militiamen from al-Sadr's Mahdi Army have also issued general strike orders in three areas of southwestern Baghdad, and in the town of Mahmoudiya.

Al-Sadr's followers have accused Iraq's Shiite-dominated government of exploiting a cease-fire to target the cleric's supporters.

Especially in advance of provincial elections expected this fall.
