Special Report: 2008 Beijing Olympic GamesThere should not be any boycott of the Beijing Olympics. That was the message from the press briefing given by the Association of National Olympic Committees earlier on Saturday.
Mario Vazquez Rana, president of Assoc. of Nat'l Olympic Committees, said, "As we all know, the term 'boycott' has long been taken out of our association's dictionary. We believe there shouldn't be such acts as boycotting the Olympics. Our major principle is to promote the Olympic movement to benefit young people and athletes around the world. No Olympic Games, including the Beijing Olympics, should be disrupted by politics."
Officials at the meeting also said no country or region so far has requested to withdraw from the Beijing Games. They said the international community should give credit to Beijing for its unrelenting efforts in the run-up to the Games, such as improving the city's air quality and easing traffic congestion. The press conference took place before the association's 16th meeting in Beijing on Monday. More than 200 topics will be discussed to help ensure a smooth Olympics in Beijing.
