The United States has launched an airstrike on a residential area of the Shiite neighborhood Sadr City in Baghdad, killing seven people and wounding more than 20 others.

The attack came on the fifth anniversary of the US capture of Baghdad.

There was a city-wide ban on traffic that left the streets deserted except for a few pedestrians.

The slum in northeastern Baghdad has been the scene of clashes between Muqtada al-Sadr's militia and US and Iraqi troops after the government launched a crackdown on the Mehdi Army late last month.
