The plight of those affected by the disaster is tugging at people's heartstrings, and donations of money, materials and blood are coming in from all over China.

In Hebei Province, residents in Xingtai and Tangshan have been active in making donations to the quake victims.

In Hebei Province, residents in Xingtai and Tangshan have been active in making donations to the quake victims. They share an emotional bond with them because the two cities suffered a similar strong earthquake 40 and 30 years ago respectively.

A Hebei resident said, "Although we are far away from Sichuan, but out hearts are together with the quake victims. I'm willing to do something for them."

Health workers in Hebei worked day and night to test and pack donated blood. They sent more than 300,000 milliliters of blood to Sichuan by air on Tuesday morning. Hebei also sent an emergency rescue team and 13 medical teams to the quake-hit region.

Such scenes can be seen around the country. In Xinjiang, people of all walks of life and ages have opened their wallets to donate cash.

At a donation center set up at the State Ethnic Affairs Commission in Beijing, people from the 55 ethnic groups make contributions.

A donor said, "It's a huge disaster, but I'm sure with the support from all ethnic groups, the disaster will be soon overcame."

The first payment of a 2-million fund from the Commission has reached Sichuan. It will be mainly used to help the Aba Tibet and Qiang Autonomous prefecture.

Meanwhile, Shanhai authorities sent 600 firefighters and police to the front line of the disaster. To carry out an efficient rescue, they took with advanced rescue equipment, such as video and audio life detectors.
