The 81-year-old wrote in a column published Monday in the government-run newspaper that Obama was "the most-advanced candidate in the presidential race," but said he has not dared to call for altering US policy toward Cuba.

In a speech before the influential Cuban American National Foundation in Miami last week, Obama said he would maintain the embargo to use as leverage for winning democratic change in Cuba. But he also said that if elected, he would ease restrictions on Cuban Americans travelling to Cuba and sending money to relatives on the island. He repeated he would be willing to meet with Raul Castro, who in February succeeded Fidel to become Cuba's new president.
