Shiziliang mountain cracks not expand in aftershocks

The Sichuan earthquake caused cracks in Shiziliang mountain in Qingchuan county near the epicenter and are a source of great concern. They're being closely monitored and experts say Tuesday's aftershocks have not enlarged the crevices.

An expert and reporter ignore the dangers and clamber up Shiziliang mountain to check for any damage caused by the aftershocks. Expanding cracks could lead to mudslides which would endanger those who live at the foot of the mountain only 100 meters below.

Zhao Hanxun, Geology & Mineral Dept. of Land & Resources Bureau, Qingchuan County, said, "Here is a good spot to monitor the crevice. We measure it every day. If the number changes, that means there has been movement. If this number doesn't change, the crack is relatively stable. Today it's 55.5 centimeters the same as yesterday. The biggest threat is aftershocks or heavy rain causing rocks to fall down on the town."

Up higher on the mountain, there are more cracks that are wider and deeper. The largest one stretches for about 500 meters with a width of between 5 to 30 meters. Local residents discovered it ten days ago and experts checked it out and are monitoring the situation.
