Special Report: Strong quake jolts SW ChinaKUALA LUMPUR, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of Malaysians gathered here Friday for a fund-raising charity night and showed their care and concern towards the victims in the deadly earthquake which struck Sichuan Province of China on May 12.
The participants, mostly from the local Chinese communities, swarmed to a convention center at Mines Resort City to donate or witness the donation by local communities and people to help the Sichuan earthquake victims.
Watching video footage of the earthquake scenes, listening to memorial songs, chorus and lyric recitation, some people even shed silent tears at the charity event entitled "Earthquake is ruthless, but Malaysians have love."
The charity night was co-organized by the major Malaysian Chinese groups, including the Associated Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia, the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia, Malaysia-China Friendship Association, Malaysia-China Business Council.
The organizers said that the May 12 earthquake had caught the sympathy of the international community. Malaysian Chinese communities also felt sad for the disaster in Sichuan and wished to extend their helping hands.
It is human to show care and concern for one another, particularly for those who are in dire need, they said.
The organizers handed over 7 million ringgit (2.2 million U.S. dollars), which was collected on the charity night, to Cheng Yonghua, Chinese ambassador to Malaysia.
It was so far the largest single charity donation of Malaysia to the earthquake victims of Sichuan Province.
