The State Council has presented an earthquake relief and reconstruction report to the Standing Committee of the Eleventh National People's Congress. |
According to the report, the May 12th earthquake is the most devastating in China's history, and the death toll may reach more than 80,000.
The report says 69,181 people have been confirmed killed in the quake, and more than 370,000 wounded. Infrastructure facilities have also been severely damaged.
250,000 members of the armed forces have been mobilized for relief efforts.
The report says so far basic life conditions in the quake hit areas have been guaranteed, and the country has made significant achievements in quake relief work.
Hui Liangyu, Vice Premier said "After the disaster, millions of victims were sheltered, with food, clean water and clothes available for them. The injured received medical service, students resumed classes in a short time. No epidemics have occurred, and no damaged water dams broke. Social stability in the quake hit areas has been maintained. This is a marvelous victory."
The report stresses it will be a long term task to return the quake hit areas back to normal.
The government will continue to focus on the settlement of the victims and epidemic prevention, and speed up repairing damaged infrastructure facilities.
Hui Liangyu said "The reconstruction in the quake hit area will take three years, within the Eleventh Five Year Plan, and will be further consolidated in the next five year plan. "
