The earthquake destroyed almost half of the buildings in Anxian county, Sichuan Province, and almost all of those left standing were in danger of collapse.
The title of the composition for the college entrance exam this year was, "The Story I Most Want To Tell." This gave the students a chance to write about surviving the disaster. Most of them shared their experiences and feelings during the earthquake.
One student said "I wrote about saying thank you to my mum, because my mum give me life and she has always stayed beside me and taken care of me when I need her, she has never left me even during the earthquake. I think we all should say thank you to our mothers."
Another student said "My essay title is 'New life above the debris,' because the earthquake damaged our hometown and without the support of our country and our government, we wouldn't have had the chance to sit here and take the exam. I'm feeling so much better now, thanks to those who helped us to rebuild our home."
The exam is over, and for successful students the next step is selecting a university and a major. The students' parents are helping them to decide.
One parent said "If her major suits her abilities and can help with reconstruction in the quake-hit zone, I think that is the best choice. We all encourage her to come back after she has graduated."
Red Cross volunteers have counseled the students to prepare them for the crucial college entrance exam. They advised them not to focus on their final results, but to just try their best.
Sun Weili, Psychologist of China Red Cross Society said "This exam is so important for them, but I suggest they don't focus on the final score. The most important thing should be to relax and do the best they can. That's enough."
The students have written their wishes on the wall to encourage themselves to face the future, always be brave and never give up.
