The epicenter was located at an area between the counties of Pingwu and Beichuan, in Mianyang City. Neighboring Shaanxi and Gansu provinces also felt the strong jolt.
The quake caused severe landslides on a road leading to the Jiuzhaigou-Huanglong scenic spot in northern Sichuan.
Excavating machines were clearing up the sites, and nearby residents have been evacuated. So far no casualties have been reported.
