Monday's relay started in the college part of the Songjiang new Town in Shanghai. The city is considered one of the most vibrant cities in the world.
The chairman of the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress Standing Committee welcomed the arrival of the Paralympic flame. He said the torch relay would help locals build a more harmonious Shanghai.
Liu Yungeng, Standing Committee chairman of Shanghai Municipal People's Congress, said, "Shanghai is one of the 11 cities on the route of the torch relay for the Beijing Paralympics. The relay is a historical task for the city. It will help promote efforts to safeguard the interests of disabled in Shanghai. And also make ordinary people in the city better understand the significance of the Paralympics."
