The convention aims to protect the right of all disabled people to enjoy fundamental freedoms fully and equally, also promoting respect for their dignity. It was approved by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2006.
China notified the UN's Secretary-General of its ratification of the convention on August the 1st. Starting August 31st, the convention took effect in China, including Hong Kong and Macao.
