The Iraqi Cabinet has authorized Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to reopen talks with the US on a security pact.

The agreement would allow U.S. troops to stay for three more years after a U.N. mandate expires on December 31st.

A government spokesman says cabinet members have proposed amendments for further negotiations.

Analysts say that with a week to go before the US presidential election, the Iraqi decision could delay an agreement on the pact.
