Obama sets record for popular votes

Statistics from US television networks show president-elect Barack Obama has won a record number of popular votes in the history of US presidential elections.

With 96 percent of the popular vote counted, Democrat Obama gained nearly 63 million votes while his rival Republican John McCain ended up with about 56 million.
