US President-elect Barack Obama's advisers said they are crafting a proposal to ship dozens of detainees from Guantanamo Bay to the US to face criminal trials.

The plan would make good on Obama's promise to close the Guantanamo Bay prison but could require the creation of a controversial new system of justice.
Under the plan, some detainees would be released while many others would be prosecuted in US criminal courts.
A third group of detainees might have to go before a new court designed especially to handle sensitive national security cases.
The move would be a sharp deviation from the Bush administration, which established military tribunals to prosecute detainees at the Navy base in Cuba and strongly opposes bringing prisoners to the US.
