Clashes between the army and Tutsi rebels have pushed a quarter of a million people out of their homes in North Kivu province since late August.

The World Food Programme has been trying to get across the frontline. Friday was the first time aid workers were able to reach people badly in need.

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has been appointed UN envoy to the Congo conflict. He's due to arrive in Kinshasa on Friday for talks.
