Hassan al-Shimari, head of the Fadhila party, made the announcement in Baghdad on Wednesday.

He said he hopes those in power will "deal with this matter with pure patriotism, far from party and personal interests".

The party, which holds 15 of Iraq's 275 parliamentary seats said the security agreement infringes on Iraq's sovereignty.

The Iraqi government agreed on Sunday to keep US troops in the country for three more years. But the agreement requires approval from parliament later this month.
