UN peacekeepers hope the latest conflict in the country may be easing.

On Wednesday, rebels appeared to be pulling back as promised.

But thousands of people remain displaced by the fighting in the east of the country.

Protesters at a crowded internally displaced camp near Goma greeted Mark Malloch Brown.

They carried signs criticising UN Peacekeepers who have struggled to protect civilians and proclaiming they were "tired of life in the camps".

Brown said he supports UN recommendations that the peacekeeping force be strengthened. And he also said talking is the only way to end the crisis.

The rebels say they are pulling their forces back from the front lines to allow for the talks with the army.

On Tuesday, fighting in Kirumba was between the army and spear-wielding Mai Mai militiamen - who had previously fought on the government side.
