Led by the People's Alliance for Democracy protesters waved placards and chanted slogans as a five-month street campaign to bring down the popularly elected government continues.
They also demanded the government take responsibility for a recent grenade attack against their fellow protesters.
The Thai military has put two thousand soldiers on standby in case the protests turn violent.
Meanwhile, thousands of government supporters rallied in a Buddhist temple on the outskirts of Bangkok to show their support for Somchai.
